Description
Transgender and gender nonconforming (TGNC) individuals experience significantly higher rates of trauma in comparison to the general population. The psychological distress of gender dysphoria in combination with trauma and societal discrimination place these clients at significantly higher risk of mental health and substance use issues. Much of the existing literature provides guidance to therapists on how to assist clients through the gender-transition process; however, there is minimal information and training available regarding how to deliver trauma-informed care based upon the unique needs of this vulnerable population. The result can lead to transgender trauma survivors being retraumatized by well-intentioned therapists and treatment programs. This training will offer a framework for understanding, recognizing and responding to trauma with TGNC clients and provide clinical guidelines and recommendations.
